New Years Professional Goals

Hello Future OTs!

We are one step closer to becoming OTs and OTAs with the start of a new semester and new year. Let's engage in some conversation on what our professional goals or resolutions are for 2017 as students or recent graduates. We'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions for what gets you excited about OT this year!

With our drastic change in presidency and administration in the U.S., I personally hope to remain engaged and informed on healthcare changes that will directly affect our profession and the clients we serve. What ways do you think OT can become involved in health policy reform and advocacy?

Best of luck for those of you starting off your classes this semester. As always, feel free to email me at shmays@wisc.edu with any questions, concerns, or suggestions about OTION and how we can best utilize this space.

Cheers!

Re: New Years Professional Goals

Hello, shmays!

Happy new year to you as well. One of my New Years’ Professional goals is to gain as much knowledge and experience as a fieldwork student in order to fully utilize and develop skills that would greatly benefit my patients/clients. Other than passing fieldwork, graduating safely, and passing the NBCOT exam, of course. ?

I also think it’s important to stay informed about changes in healthcare as it can directly affect the services we provide. I know that OTs can advocate for people with disabilities through contact with our local government, but other than that, I’m very unfamiliar in knowledge and experience as to how it works. My classmates and I had a group project on contacting and speaking with a government official about their policy to further help people with disabilities, but that was mostly it. I’d like to know more on how I could help.

Looking forward to reading other posts about it!

Re: New Years Professional Goals

Meg,

I'm with you in terms of getting anxious to finish fieldwork and pass the NBCOT. Thanks for sharing your professional goals! That's awesome that your class had a group project contacting a government official and advocating for individuals with disabilities. What did that entail and how did they respond? What university do you attend?

Best,
