  • OT Education Programs in Africa

I am gathering updated information about OT programs in Africa for my MS students about OT programs in Africa.

How many OT Education programs are on the Continent of Africa?
Which ones are 3 year certificate programs?
Which ones are Bachelors in OT?
Which ones are MS in OT?
Do any of the OT programs in Africa offer a OTD or a PhD?

Thank you!
anne marie
Hi Anne Marie,

We have been working on compiling such a list @ OTARG, at the moment we have a list of 22 OT Schools from about 9 countries. The list is not conclusive though. I couldn't attach the table here, the format gets messed up if i'm to paste it here. For OTARG member countries see: www.otarg.org.za

Hi Anne Marie and Tongai,

As I see more and more education programmes developing in Africa and being approved by WFOT, I feel that it will be useful to share this information broadly. I would like to include it in the next issue of the WFOT Bulletin as an update from the previous table prepared by Rosenn Botokru Beguin in November 2013 (WFOT Bulletin 68:51-58. We could comment on the number of new programmes approved at our last Council Meeting in March.

You can contact me at BulletinEditor@wfot.com

Thanks lots,
Kit Sinclair

Hi,

I studied at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa,

If I remember correctly South Africa has 8 accredited 4 year OT programs.

Stellenbosch is a B.OT course, and also offers OT on Masters and Doctorate levels.
Not too sure about the other universities in SA

Goodluck forming your list!

Excited to hear about these developments, as an OT in the UK with an interest in OT practice in Ghana and Africa in general.

Hi Linlin,
I know that the OT education program in Accra, Ghana started about 2-3 years ago. Thanks for showing interest in the forum!

Cheers!

In Nigeria, there are only two institutions that offer Occupational Therapy. One is a Federal School; offers a diploma (3years), and the other, a university; offers a bachelorette degree (5years).
