Hello,
I am an Occupational Therapist in the US. I am interested in doing some volunteer work in another country. I'm interested in doing something in a developing country for 1-2 weeks. Im fairly new in my career, and specialize in dementia care currently. I'm most interested in taking my foundation as an OT, and applying it creatively to help those without access to therapy.
Two things:
1) Does anyone have a recommendation for a good resource book that provides helpful interventions when working in a developing country/environment? I remember learning about a book while I was in school, but can't for the life of me find the name of that book. The book had ideas on how to make wheelchairs and splints out of everyday items, etc.
2) Has anyone had a positive experience with an international therapy volunteer organization that they could refer me to? Im especially interested in SE Asia, Central and South America. Most of the organizations I've explored have an expensive fee for volunteering and don't seem to have a focus on therapy.

but am from UGANDA am still a student currently in my final year. But I have contact of some organization working in Madagascar they are introducing OT and rehabilitation services there, so I don't know how about that.

My name is Sarah and I am a current student pursuing my masters at Texas Woman's University in Texas. My husband has accepted a job in Abu Dhabi and I am looking into moving over with him once I graduate. Does anyone have any insight to any resources that would provide me with qualification requirements to work in Abu Dhabi or Dubai? Most of the job postings I see require two years of experience, would an new grad be considered?

I have been working in Seychelles from 2010-2015, framed Occupational therapy curriculum for national level diploma there. Then moved back to Chennai , India in 2015. I am Emma and I am from Mauritius. I studied a BSc in Occupational Therapy in Perth, Western Australia and graduated recently.
In my country OT is in its infancy and I would love to gain experience abroad. I have applied for jobs in many countries such as Australia, the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong and unfortunately there is one issue: the inability to obtain a working visa. If anyone has suggestions or can help?

Hello everyone - My name is Maria Schmitt and I have been an OT for 24 years ... I am currently trying to finish my OTD and looking to work abroad either as an instructor for an OT program ... I also work per diem in adult home health and my regular job is pediatrics specifically physical disabilities and autism ... Can someone point me in the right direction on how to find a job in UK, Ireland, Spain, France, Germany ... think i am in a mid life crisis,....
ready to move, and ready to do some meaningful work,...was looking at volunteering somewhere , internationally maybe,...and i can't afford to do that,...ha! so, thought i would explore working as an OT abroad.
it has been almost 2 years since i have practiced as an OT in adult rehab,....
i have done some OT in the schools here,.....and now work as a teacher assistant in spec ed.
it is time to either use it or lose it,...my OT credentials,....
any suggestions of jobs,....training that would be helpful to make me marketable for overseas work,....would be appreciated.

Fabulous to read all your posts!! earlier this week I came to The Gambia for 3-6 months, I'm an OT but will be working with a Gambian charity, Mobee, to set up community mental health services ... with an OT approach of course. I qualified 4 years ago and it boils down to a flippant comment that has brought me out here but am very excited (and daunted) by the work waiting for me! - any links or comments of advice will all be gratefully received, especially if its pointing me in the direction of practices in low-income / developing countries

Hi all,
What an amazing forum.
I am an Irish OT who has been working in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates for the last 4 years. Senior OT and Head of OT service in my last 2 positions. Been lucky enough to develop 2 new services from the ground up here in Dubai (Vocational and Transitioning program for teens with disabilities and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, both the first of their kind in the middle east! 🙂 ). Lots of experience with licensing, hiring and supervising foreign OTs in the UAE so any questions about Dubai or Abu Dhabi feel free. Have had lots of great experience presenting at various international conferences and has been a frequent speaker on professional panels and debates on the subject of support for individuals with disabilities in the UAE. Also appear in the media in the middle east on health and OT related topics (Radio (approx once per month), print and TV).

Have been considering a move to Canada in the next 2 years as it can be tough here with a young familiy during the summer months. Speaking to colleagues online I have grown to really like the Canadian service delivery model and core values and think it might be a positive step (as well as a big scary one 🙂 ) I'm specifically looking at Toronto and am trying to build a timeline for transitioning over and the steps involved.

griffiap Hi Adam! I am so sorry to bother you since your post was made in 2016. I am currently trying to look into possibilities working in UAE as pediatric OT. How did you find working in UAE ? What are the necessary steps to be able to work as an OT? How to search for a job? Also, I am looking into the DHA licensing and was wondering if there is a better way to prep for the test?

I'm Peter Drzymala an OT of 23yrs. currently employed in the capacity as the Professional Practice Lead for LIH Sky City Rehabilitation Hospital in Kunming, China. It is a new 104-bed Rehab facility in the southern part of China that is scheduled to open in Jan. of 2017. Our intention is to bring high quality, evidence-based, client-centred rehabilitation to the population of China and also to provide Professional Development for OTs in China.
