Online and international connection for therapists. Great idea WFOT.
I am running the first ever Online International Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Summit. Breast cancer rehabilitation is a vital new field of practice. Increasing survivorship rates associated with improved health care has resulted in a high experience of chronic impairments within this population. 50% of women report at least one chronic adverse upper body impairment ( pain, weakness, tingling impaired sensation, impaired QOL). The current "rehab" advice is not working for many people and this experience is similar in many countries across the world.
Unfortunately most surgeons, radiotherapists and oncologists within this field of study do not have experience or brain space to deal with rehabilitation needs of their patients.
A summit format allows speakers from many professions working in this field of study or practice to present their findings and strategies at an online forum - spread over a week. Listeners (clinicians and breast cancer care workers) are contacted by social medium platforms and are invited to listen to the presenters. The presentations are available to listen for free for 24 hrs after the presentation is made available online. Listeners can also purchase the entire package of presentations and additional resource materials.
The aim is to increase awareness of the importance of rehabilitation for post breast cancer and the need for diverse therapy input.
As an Occupational Therapist, I have developed scar assessments, breast /chest scar treatments and home treatment programs. These are very different to what was taught within my university - as the radiotherapy, chemotherapy and location of scar tissue is very unique. Untreated active scra tissue at the breast can affect shoulder performance over many many years.
As a sole private OT practitioner - I can run this type of educational and networking event from my home office. Very exciting. If other therapists wish to comment, learn the process or be involved please contact me.

DeniseOT,
Thank you for your post. This online summit sounds like a great idea! Because the topic appears more related to practice, I moved the post to the Practice forum so others can find it easily.
All the best,
Bill
