  • Hi,

You can maybe take a look at FIMS or FAMS.

It might be more physical but has scoring for cognitive skills as well. You score on a scale to see how independant the client is with ADL tasks and other meassures eg writing, reading, ect.

  • Hey Gemma,

Shoe I was trying to think of weird and wonderful things, but all that came to mind was African Drumming that is taking the psychiatric OT world by storm. It is showing amazing results and more research is being done on it.

Will think of some more things!

    goodluck,

  • Hello,

I am working in an acute hospital in South Africa.
Here I deal with many acute CVA patients and we work closely with Physios

to motivate our patients we usually 'walking'. Patients are keen to start walking again and I find that that is their main priority above any other ADL's at that stage of the illness. After that we start working on other ADL's such as eating and dressing, or some leisure activities. We do not get far with other ADL's as we are a short stay hospital.

I also find that our patients do not want to have catheters and nappies on and that also gets them walking - walk safely and then the patients can use the bathroom independently.

    With regards to the relationship...
I make it very clear to my patients what is my role in terms of their rehab and that I want to help, but that we are a team.
I also find that basic socializing eg asking how is the family, chatting about the news, ect helps build a comfortable relationship to get up close and personal with physical rehab. A lot of empathy eg "i understand it is sore" ect ect and genuinely meaning it helps as well.
A lot of education and explaining why you are using these methods, ect helps builds trust.

    Hope this helps.
    Goodluck with your thesis
  • Hi,

I studied at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa,

If I remember correctly South Africa has 8 accredited 4 year OT programs.

Stellenbosch is a B.OT course, and also offers OT on Masters and Doctorate levels.
Not too sure about the other universities in SA

    Goodluck forming your list!
